He was elected as Secretary General of Hezbollah by the group's founding council on November 30, 1992, with approval from Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces from 1981 to 1989, Nasrallah was chosen by Khomeini to lead Hezbollah after its formation in 1985. He was imprisoned for two years following the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
